Description
The Northern Saw-Whet Owl (Aegolius acadicus) is one of the smallest owls found in North America, about the size of an American Robin. It measures about 8 inches in length and about 2.8 ounces in weight. While they are fairly common, they are hard to spot in their habitat because of their small size and how well their plumage blends with forest foliage. Their preferred habitat is coniferous forest and occasionally deciduous woods in North America. While they are described as appearing to be pretty, cute, and fluffy, they are raptors, killing and feeding on mostly small mammals. They feed by flying from their perches down on prey at night. Typical prey includes mice and voles, and occasionally birds.
This Northern Saw-Whet Owl, perched and well-hidden within an evergreen, was photographed in Southwestern Connecticut, on the overcast and rainy winter morning of 2-22-2017. I used Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 VR2 telephoto zoom lens to capture this image. Settings: 1/60 sec, flash, f/3.5, ISO 400.
I am honored that my photograph was featured in the Fine Art America groups:
