Artist's Description

Edison at work as a child. 19th-century illustration of future US inventor Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) at the age of 12 (in around 1859), selling newspapers and other items to train passengers. Edison lived in Port Huron, Michigan, USA, at the time, and worked on the Port Huron to Detroit railroad, with trains operated by the Grand Trunk Railway. Edison went on to become a successful businessman and inventor, with numerous influential patents and inventions. These included the phonograph, the motion picture camera, and the electric light bulb. This illustration is from 'Physique Populaire' (Emile Desbeaux, 1891).
