Description
This beautiful Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio), which is named "Little Moon", is a captive, rehabilitated bird, located at the Pace University Environmental Center. James Eyring, a Master Falconer and Assistant Director of the Center, is the caretaker and trainer of all the raptors and animals at the Center. The Center's mission includes education of university students and children of all ages, research, and wildlife rehabilitation of injured or compromised birds and animals.
The Eastern Screech-Owl (Megascops asio) is a small owl with a wide distribution over the United States east of the Rocky Mountains. It measures about 8.5 inches in length and weighs about 6 ounces. It is strongly streaked and barred, has ear tufts, and has a pale greenish bill. There are three color morphs, Red, Brown and Gray, that represent a continuous spectrum of variation. Eastern Screech-Owls are found in a variety of wooded areas and are nocturnal, but thankfully may be seen during the day while roosting in a tree hole. They hunt for rodents and insects from their perch.
This small and beautiful Eastern Screech-Owl named "Little Moon" perched on a Falconer's hand was photographed at the Pace University Environmental Center in Pleasantville, New York on 6-30-2015. I used a Nikon D810 camera body and a Nikon 300mm f/2.8 VR2 lens to capture this image.

This is fantastic - that tiny, cute little owl sitting trustingly on your (?) finger! I do so love owls. This photo has great detail and color.
Morris Finkelstein replied:
Thank you Kay! I let James, the Falconer, have the small owl perch on his finger...I needed all of mine to take the photo, and to keep afterwards!
