Description
Duodenum lining. Endoscope view showing the lining of the duodenal bulb in a patient with coeliac disease. The duodenum is the uppermost and shortest part of the small intestine, and is the main site of absorption for minerals. Coeliac disease (or gluten enteropathy) is an uncommon genetic condition where the lining of the intestine reacts to gluten, a protein found in cereals. This causes malabsorption, and mineral and vitamin deficiency.
