Drinking water supply, 19th-century artwork. Pumps supplying drinking water to the city of Boston, USA. Called the Chestnut Hill Waterworks, this facility was established in 1887. It was the largest waterworks in New England. The engines installed here could pump tens of millions of gallons of water daily.
