This was done in UF 5, with starting params from another fractal piece done by Joe Zazulak at the Renderosity website. This was a major "tweak" of his piece, and very different from what he had come up with already. I think this looks so much like a pair of lungs and a heart, and it's one of my all-time favorite pieces!
