Description
Dorothy Day was a radical left journalist who converted to the Catholic faith in the mid-1920s. In time she became a radical for the cause of Christ, and has been called the most important American Catholic of the twentieth century. In 1932 she met Peter Maurin, a Catholic social thinker who was to become her mentor in the work of founding the newspaper The Catholic Worker and the movement of that name. In the worst years of the Great Depression, Day and her co-workers established urban houses of hospitality and also communal farms to serve the needs of the homeless and unemployed. The movement still exists today as a loose association of houses of hospitality and farms around the world. Catholic worker activism has always been based on the seven traditional corporal works of mercy, which are listed in this picture on the first page of the Catholic Worker paper held up by Day. Rosettes at top left and right show photos of the two most important people in Dorothy Days life, her daughter Tamar and Peter Maurin. The floral border is made up of morning glories, based on a passing reference appreciating that flower in Days journal. Around the saints neck is an old-fashioned sort of baptismal garment, which seems to be appropriate since all of Days work as a follower of Christ she did as simply a baptized Christian, a lay person. Photo images from Days life and work make up the stylized urban structures lining the street in which Day stands. And above everything, the chi-rho monogram of Christ. A sketch of Days life, and information about the cause for her sainthood, can be found at http://dorothydayguild.org/herlife.htm.
