Dinosaurs Once Roamed Here
See that informational sign center, left edge; I learned something new about the area.
The amazing story of dinosaur life; some of the larger dinosaurs were discovered in the early 1930s in the Black Mesa area.
Dr. J. W. Stovall, who spent a large portion of his career studying the geology and paleontology of the Cimarron Valley in Oklahoma and New Mexico, excavated 17 dinosaur quarries between 1935 and 1942 in Cimarron County alone. Approximately 6,000 bones were collected from the Morrison formations. The ancient dinosaur life in this area included the Apatosaurus, Stegosaurus and Allosaurus.
Following the hike, we explored several backroads and found a number of dinosaur footprints. Once back home, I wanted to learn a bit more and in doing so I found out about the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History in Norman, Oklahoma. One display showcases a possible scene from the days when the Black Mesa was literally a Jurassic park.
