Robert Mitchum portrays Bill O'Brien, an American soldier who becomes drawn to Marise and offers her comfort and companionship during her husband's absence. As Marise and Bill grow closer, they find solace in each other's company, but their burgeoning relationship is complicated by Paul's sudden return, causing tensions to arise and old wounds to resurface.
