Description
This is a cemetery on Bayou Lafourche in Galliano, Louisiana. Cajuns are mostly descended from French immigrant ancestors. Their name comes from Acadia in Nova Scotia, Canada, where they originally settled - they were expelled by the British in the 18th Century, and many eventually ended up in southern Louisiana.
Anthony Bourdain said it best:
“There are parts of America that are special, unique, unlike anywhere else. Cultures all their own, kept close, much loved but largely misunderstood. The vast patchwork of saltwater marshes, bayous, and prairie land that make up Cajun country is one of those places.”
"They still have the boats, they still go fishin', they still go crabbin'. And it's still a family community where you sit on the front porch and every Sunday you do the 'veiller'," he says, using the Cajun French word for conversations on the porch with family and friends.
