Deer Watching

A white-tailed deer munches on some leaves. She watches three women peering through their binoculars. They are looking for wildlife such as deer. While they look, the deer placidly watches them.

This is an acrylic painting on a 24 by 36 inch canvas. It is a composition of my own imagination. Yet, it is based on an afternoon I spent with some friends at the Great Outdoors RV and Golf Resort in Titusville, Florida. My friends were driving me around in a golf cart showing me many of the wildlife trails. They carried binoculars and I carried my camera. I nearly didn't see the deer, who was standing just a few inches from me on one of the trails. Fortunately, my friends pointed her out. She was relatively tame and didn't mind my getting right up close to photograph her. I suspect this isn't an uncommon phenomenon. Just the same, I was delighted.

Although born in upstate New York, I grew up mostly in Nevada and California. The fabulous panoramic views of the far west inspired me to begin painting and photographing it’s beauty. I’ve lived in various areas in the states and in Europe but always had the desire to express through painting and photography. While living in the Mediterranean, I was especially influenced by the great Renaissance art and the chiaroscuro work of Caravaggio. I began with oils, worked with a wide variety of mediums but now mostly work in acrylic, oils, and photography.
