Shadows from the late afternoon sun cast deep velvet highlights into a quiet, country landscape.

Day Closing captures a moment in a country afternoon when the sun is heading on its way toward the west, but it isn’t quite there. Because this is late summer, early fall, sunset still comes later in the evening, and the sense of twilight – the gloaming – extends well into the dusk.

If the star in the sky is bright enough, one can just see its twinkle out of the corner of your eye. This is the transition time between late afternoon and evening, and it is a time of quiet, reflection, peace, and meditation. Because this is out in the country, there has been work to do all day, and with animals on the farm, the work doesn’t end when the sun sets, because the animals need to be fed and possibly milked, and it’s always wise to doublecheck the hen house door to make sure that it is secure for the night, and no predators will get in.

I am a fine art painter who creates representational images celebrating light, life, and color. A commercial illustrator for more than 20 years, I have been painting for most of my life, and in the last 13 years have focused exclusively on fine art. I celebrate images that invite the viewer to step into the artwork and experience a sense of joy, peace, freedom, encouragement, meditation, and thought.
