Description
The Darss is originally a part of a peninsula at the South of the Baltic Sea in the German state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Its full name is Fischland-Darss-Zingst, for these were the names of three regions making up the peninsula, the "Dass" originally being the name of the still giant forest there. In recent times the name "Darss" applies also to the entire peninsula. It is situated within the territory of the county of Nordvorpommern. There are four villages on the peninsula - Ahrenshoop, Born, Wieck and Prerow. Between the peninsula and the mainland there is a very shallow lagoon (Low German: Bodden), which is a part of the Western Pomerania Lagoon Area National Park, just as the entire peninsula itself. The peninsula is about 45 km long. The Darss is famous for being a resting place for tens of thousands of migrating cranes and geese. Tourism has long been a source of income and been increased after the German reunification, but the Darss is still far from becoming a crowded tourist place.
