Description
These mini daffodils are blooming in a tire planter beside our front door! This is their first season to bloom as I just planted the bulbs last year. They are a very welcome sight after the winter months in Western Colorado.
A symbol of spring; narcissus, daffodil, daffadowndilly, or jonquil are all various common names for this flower which were originally white or yellow in color. They grow in meadows and woods alike as both wild and domestic bulb varieties having been cultivated since earliest times. Alzheimer’s dementia medication has been developed from them; however, they are poisonous if eaten.
Daffodils appeared in western art panel paintings in the late middle ages where they were used to symbolize death, crucifixion, and hope in the resurrection. While in eastern cultures they signified good fortune, prosperity and good luck. Also, poets, writers, etc. have utilized daffodils as subjects throughout documented time. Below is the first stanza from the famous daffodil poem by Willian Wordsworth:
Daffodils by William Wordsworth
“I wander'd lonely as a cloud
That floats on high o'er vales and hills,
When all at once I saw a crowd,
A host of golden daffodils,
Beside the lake, beneath the trees
Fluttering and dancing in the breeze.”…
