Granite invading gneiss. Cut rock surface showing granite (orange) invading gneiss (grey). This rock mixture was formed by molten magma" rising from deep in the Earth and forcing its way into layers of gneiss. The magma has cooled and solidified in- to the igneous rock granite. Gneiss, a type of metamorphic rock, is formed when rock is baked by intense heat and pressure (which often come from nearby magma intrusions). These extreme forces, typically found in the roots of mountains, oblit- erate the rock's original structure and cause minerals to recrystallize in bands. The red flecks are crystals of garnet, a semi-precious gemstone. Magnification x0.25 at 35mm size."
