Description
The Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment is the right quay of the Bolshaya Neva on Vasilevsky Island. The embankments promenade is very rich in landmarks, which can be admired while you stroll down, or even visited.
This is where the smaller cruise ships like the Seabourn fleet are moored close to the centre of St Petersburg rather than the large terminal 3 miles outside the city where the large cruise ships have to go.
Some of the most interesting things to see and visit along the Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment include: the Naval Institute, which was founded by Peter the Great in 1701; the Church of the Assumption of Mary, a five domed church dating from 1897; the Barracks of the Finland Regiment, with the palace of the Dolgorukovs; the Mining Institute Museum, which can be visited only by appointment; the Russian/Soviet icebreaker Krasin; and the Narodovolets Submarine D-2 museum. STS Mir is moored at the Lieutenant Schmidt Embankment.
