Description
With the 2 Cobras and the Shelby GT350 Blueplanprints, I figured it's time to ice the cake! On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of their fabulous victory at LeMans in 1964, here's my rendering of Peter Brock's amazing Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe. It's also a good time to retell some illustrious Cobra history, (this is similar to what I've stated on the actual artwork).
Designed by Peter Brock, the Shelby Daytona Coupes were built to address the inherent aerodynamic deficiencies of the original "Cobra" roadsters when they raced at high speed tracks like Daytona and LeMans. Powered by a Shelby-tuned "FIA-spec" Ford 289 V-8 and clad in Brock's delicious body, the cars proved they could do what was expected of them and although they just missed winning the championship that year, they went on to beat the Ferraris on quite a few occasions—most notably scoring GT class wins at Sebring and LeMans in 1964. With Ferrari's withdrawal from the GT category in 1965, the Daytona Coupes dominated and won the championship. At the end of the 1965 season however, it was decreed that the 1966 sportscar championship was to be decided in the prototype class so after only 2 very successful years, the Daytona Coupes were retired and the Shelby organization turned their expertise to Ford's GT40 program.
This new Blueplanprint makes a brilliant statement in any Shelby fan's collection and as I've said before, they do make a great addition to the bar, rec room, garage, office or den! Please help me get the word out by passing along my Fine Art America store-site address to all your friends and fellow enthusiasts. Keep checking from time to time, there's lot's more to come! Many Thanks! Doug Switzer
