The Roaring Bull, the red ferry seen in this painting, is one of two ferries operated by the Millersburg Ferry Boat Association at its 1 mile crossing of the Susquehanna River between Millersburg, Pennsylvania in Dauphin County Pennsylvania and Ferryboat Campground landing on the Perry County side. The Millersburg Ferry has been in operation for 205 years and is a quintessential Millersburg icon. The ferry conveys both round trip and one way passengers and vehicles, including cars, motorcycles and Amish buggies across the river. When it first began 205 years ago the barge was poled across the river, later changes included steam, and a side paddle wheel design up to the present design powered by diesel --a "wooden double stern-wheel paddleboat, the last of its kind in the United States.
