Bedsore. Close-up of a very large and deep bedsore on the skin of an elderly woman. Pus (yellow) is seen inside this ulcer, formed as a result of an infection. Bedsores, also known as pressure sores or decubitus ulcers, are caused by extended periods of rest in one position and are common in patients who are bedridden, unconscious or immobile. Eventually the skin covering areas bearing the body's weight breaks down to form these ulcers. Regular turning, careful hygiene of common bedsore sites and barrier creams may be used to stop ulcers forming. Ulcers are treated with antibiotic drugs, packing the wound with foam or surgery.
