Description
Circuit boards from four of the earliest electronic computers, designed and built by the University of Pennsylvania for the US Army's Ballistics Research Laboratory (BRL). From left to right: Patsy Simmers holds an ENIAC board, Gail Taylor holds an EDVAC board, Milly Beck holds an ORDVAC board and Norma Stec a board from BRLESC-I. These computers were built between the 1940s and 1960s, and the size of the boards illustrates the changes in computing technology during this time. While ENIAC contained around 19,000 vacuum tubes and occupied thousands of square feet of floor space, BRLESC contained only 1727 tubes.
