Artist's Description
I painted this in honor of my mother. I recently found out that she was descended from the St, Croix Tribe (Ojibwa) and felt inspired by the richness and depth of the Native American heritage I knew so little about. I decided to begin capturing some of the new as well as old traditions of the Chippewa People on canvas.
About Rafaela Stoeckley
I was four when my grandmother brought me my first box of crayons and a coloring book. I immediately scribbled like mad covering every surface of every page, an occasional crayon breaking and taking flight, to the horror of my mother and grandmother as they watched. I have been in love with the smell of crayons ever since. My father was the greatest influence on me as an artist. Though he no longer produced art he began sketching with me when I was about six. The dishes were pushed aside after dinner each night and he would instruct me. The texture of brown paper grocery bags made perfect drawing paper. We primarily worked on the anatomy of the face, using techniques he had learned while studying the masters in his younger...
