Description
Chinese opera arose in the mid-19th century and had become extremely popular in the Qing Dynasty court. The facial makeup uses a special method which emphasizes characteristics. The costumes are made of silks and satins in bright colors, and represent the strong Chinese characteristic. From the styles, audiences can identify the characters.
Many of the most famous operas that continue to be performed today are from the Kunqu repertoire, including: "The Peony Pavilion," "The Peach Blossom Fan," and adaptations of the older "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," and "Journey to the West."
Traditional art with a modern twist.
