Description
This image displays a beautiful statue of a woman. It stands in Grant Park near Michigan Avenue and Balbo. It is a memorial to Theodore Thomas, the first conductor of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. It is referred to as The Spirit of Music Statue. She holds a lyre in her left arm, having just struck a chord. Thomas, a violinist and conductor, was a huge factor in the building of Orchestra Hall, which was dedicated in 1904, just weeks before Thomas passed. I've lived in Chicago for most of my life, and yet I'd never seen this beautiful monument until today.
