Description
This child beneath the arm and in the folds of a woman's dress represents the virtue of charity at the Grand Army of the Republic Memorial in Washington, D.C. This three-sided monument has on its front block two soldiers representing "Fraternity" and on another side a woman holding a shield and sword for "Loyalty". On the third side of the monument is a woman protecting a child, and this is "Charity". There is also the inscription "The Greatest Of These Is Charity" which is taken from a Biblical verse in First Corinthians. This monument is also known as the Dr. Benjamin F. Stephenson Memorial. Stephenson founded the Grand Army of the Republic, a fraternal organization for veterans of the Civil War who fought for the Union. The monument is located at Pennsylvania Avenue and 7th Street, near the United States Capitol.
