Such crosses form a major part of Celtic art. Astanding Celtic cross, made of stone and often richly ornamented, iscalled a high cross or Irish Cross. Celtic crosses may have had originsin the early Coptic church. In Ireland, it is a popular myth that the Celtic cross was introducedby Saint Patrick or possibly Saint Declan during his time convertingthe pagan Irish.

It represented the four directions of the winds - North, South, East, West. It also stood for the four seasons, and the energy of the male life force.
