Description
The rapids at Cascade Locks with its huge boulders made passage along the Columbia River virtually impossible, requiring a very difficult 4.5 mile portage. The difficulty in getting through the rapids was well documented by Lewis and Clark. They lost one of their canoes when they tried to pull it through the rapids on their return trip in 1806. The canal and locks to navigate the rapids were completed in 1896 at Cascade Locks, replacing a railroad line beside the river on which the flat bottom boats were dragged overland. The locks were in operation until 1935 when they were flooded following the completion of Bonneville Dam located a few miles down river.
