Set in the American South during the early 20th century, the film explores themes of class struggle, racial tensions, and the plight of tenant farmers.

Richard Barthelmess stars as Marvin Blake, a young sharecropper's son who works on a cotton plantation owned by the wealthy Lane family. Bette Davis portrays the seductive and manipulative Madge Norwood, the daughter of the plantation owner, who becomes romantically involved with Marvin.

As Marvin becomes increasingly disillusioned with the injustices faced by the tenant farmers, he becomes involved in labor organizing efforts and confronts the exploitation and abuse perpetuated by the plantation owners.
