Description
Abstract expressionist painting entitled Butterfly composition 1123. Color borders are hard edged with a flat texture, composed as contemporary interpretation of the Color Field movement. As far back as 1950s stripes have been a recognized and powerful element of choice by abstract expressionist artists such as Barnett Newman, Bridget Riley and Gene Davis. By way of digression, my stripe series build on their work introducing a minimalist subject. The subject, usually a reference to nature introduces movement and depth to the composition. The subject further strikes a balance between a concrete theme such as animals (representing order) and the abstract composition of colors and shapes (representing chaos) as the two formidable laws governing the nature. By simplifying the subject, and avoiding monotonous patterns, I aim to draw the attention to the highly articulated and psychological use of color and shape compositions. To avoid a mere pretty imitation of Color Field predecessors, I apply a holistic approach to elicit meditative emotions from contemporary viewer heavily influenced by digital media.
