I received a phone call while I was taking this photo tonight of a former Burning Man statue that's now at California's Treasure Island. The call was from a lady in Oakland who said she had a bunch of my stuff: a laptop bag, a backpack full of student essays, some clothes, and a bunch of camping gear. After freaking out for a little bit, I walked back to my truck and noticed that two windows were busted out, and glass was all over the place. I called the lady back, who saw all my stuff on the side of the road in Oakland and decided to pick it up, and she gave me her address to stop by and claim my stolen belongings, which hadn't even been out of my possession for more than an hour.

The thieves kept my laptop computer and threw everything else out of the window in Oakland, and while I'm super bummed that I lost my laptop and had to drive back to Reno in the cold with missing windows, I'm also super grateful that the lady in Oakland rescued so many of my belongings and called me very quickly. Thankfully, I had some business cards in the laptop bag, and my phone was in my pocket. I have all the images on my laptop backed up, and it is password protected, so it will be tough for it to be used in any way. I filed an online report with the San Francisco Police Department. Most likely, I'll never see the computer again, but I'm still really glad that the lady in Oakland turned a negative situation into something a little better.
