Description
Browns Point Lighthouse is not the typical mariners beacon. It is industrial looking, square and made of no-frills concrete. This tower was erected in 1933 during the height of the Great Depression. Regardless of the troubled economic times, it was vital to protect shipping lanes in and out of Commencement Bay in Tacoma. It actually has an almost art deco appearance.
It is fully automated and the crown was replaced with an open beacon and cameras to direct traffic in the harbor.
A group of very dedicated folks keep the grounds in good shape and the lightkeepers quarters are now offered as week-long rentals for those who wish to experience the feel of being a lightkeeper.
Browns Point lies at 47.30591 latitude and -122.44429 longitude.
