Description
(Copyright Mel Steinhauer all rights reserved) In the weeks and months that followed December 7th, 1941, my father, two of his brothers and two cousins joined the Army. Dad went to England, Uncle Bob went to the Pacific Theater and Uncle Harold went to North Africa. They never saw each other again, until it was all over and they returned home in 1945. Their cousins were killed in Italy and France. So it seemed only natural that when the Army sent my older brother to Vietnam in 1967, that I should also go. I volunteered for a K-9 unit simply because they were located at his base. I promised Mom and Dad that I would find him and send photographs of us together. I arrived just months after he had survived combat during the 1968 Tet Offensive. With only three months left on his tour, we saw each other several times. We both made it home, but our cousin and some friends did not. Here we are together, proudly showing the name tags on our shirts because we were ... Brothers In Arms.
