Description
The iconic Brooklyn Bridge spans the East River, connecting Brooklyn to Manhattan. Since its opening in 1883 millions of commuters and tourist have traversed the span on foot or bicycle, pushing carts or driving trucks, riding in trains or cars. An average day sees 150,000 cars and pedestrians cross the Brooklyn Bridge.
Designed by John Augustus Roebling the Brooklyn Bridge took 14 years to build (1868-1883) at a cost of $15 million ($320 million in contemporary funds). Roebling's innovative suspension-bridge technology--webbed network of cable trusses connected to the sides of the span--allowed stable, lengthy spans over the Niagara Gorge, the Monongahela River in Pittsburgh, and the Ohio River in Cincinnati (the world's longest span at completion in 1867). Roebling's success led to a contract to span the East River connecting Manhattan to Brooklyn. Over two dozen workers lost their lives during construction, including John A. Roebling. Washington A. Roebling, a civil engineer and Civil War hero, took over construction supervision upon his father's death. (Washington Roebling served as Gen. Gouverneur Warren's aide-d-camp and is credited with playing a significant role in the defense of Little Round Top at the Battle of Gettysburg.)
Showman extraordinaire P. T. Barnum marched 21 elephants across the Brooklyn Bridge on 17 May 1884 to prove the bridge stable.
This fine art photographic print of the Brooklyn Bridge draws on the symbolic strength of NYC's famed bridge. It is the perfect focal point to span a decorative gap on your home, office or business wall.
