Description
BRLESC I (Ballistic Research Laboratory's Electronic Scientific Computer). Technicians operating the console of a first-generation general-purpose electronic computer that went into operation in 1962. Designed and built by the US Army's Ballistic Research Laboratory in Maryland, BRLESC I solved ballistics, logistics and evaluation problems that demanded high computational speeds, at a rate of 5 million operations per second. The input and output devices used punch cards and magnetic tape. The console shown displayed what was happening inside the machine. The woman on the left is Gail Purdham; the man is Loyd Campbell.
