Description
Here in the States, public phones have all but disappeared. They still seem to linger in Britain. They were a great convenience in the old days. Maybe not all that sanitary. But a part of the landscape for many years. I remember my mother telling me stories from her younger years when few homes had telephones. Someone would call the corner drug store (pharmacy, chemists) to reach someone on the block. Then a kid hanging around reading magazines for free would be sent to the house to let you know you had a call. Then you would run down breathless to the corner.
Of course the kid being a nosey body would try to listen. Especially if it was a beau. A budding reporter. It was best to give him a tip.
