Description
Boerhaave's hysteria treatment. Historical artwork of the Dutch physician Hermann Boerhaave (1668-1738, centre), treating a patient with hysteria at Leiden hospital in 1710. Boerhaave found that people suffering from hysteria could be calmed by making them frightened, and so began threatening them with red-hot pokers. Boerhaave took a pioneering, mechanistic view of the human body and was an excellent lecturer. His practice of taking his students to visit patients in hospital founded clinical teaching.
