Description
Violin instructor William Egbert first offered instruction and rooms to eight students in 1892, marking the foundation of Ithaca Conservatory of Music. Today, Ithaca College today ranks among the elite liberal arts colleges in the United States. Seeking a permanent home beyond rented space in the city's opera house, school leaders purchased Judge Boardman's spatial downtown home in 1910. Boardman House served as one of the school's original downtown campus buildings and iconic center of the campus until the college's move to South Hill in the 1960s. By 1931 expanded academic offerings led the school to recharter as Ithaca College. Ithaca College is nationally recognized for its School of Music and the Roy H. Park School of Communications.
Built in 1867 and named for the first Dean of Cornell Law School, Douglas Boardman, the three-story Italianate brick structure came under Ithaca Conservatory ownership in 1910. Following the campus move to South Hill Boardman House served for a time as the Ithaca Museum of Art and is now privately owned for offices. Boardman House is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1971).
