Near Mexia TX was this little patch of bluebonnets surrounding a tilted mailbox. It was a warm sunny lazy day and the little scene was just so appealing that I had to stop for some photos. Bluebonnets are the state flower of Texas and every spring people go a little crazy trying to get good pictures of wildflowers. It almost becomes a competitive sport. An article in the NY times says "On sunny spring weekends, countless cars park on the sides of Texas highways and farm roads as crowds spill into fields of bluebonnets, heedless of snakes, scorpions, bees, fire ants, bull nettle and even barbed wire." April is peak blooming season, and thanks to statewide seeding efforts that began in the 1930s by the Texas Highway Department, bluebonnets grow abundantly along roadsides and have infiltrated much of the adjoining land. Lady Bird Johnson was also instrumental in the push to plant more wildflowers in the 1960s.
