Description
The Petrified Forest National Park of Arizona is a surprising land of astonishing color in the high elevation Painted Desert ranging across the Navajo Nation of northeastern Arizona. The Chinle Formation, notorious for its vivid magentas. reds, oranges and yellows is what gives this land the name. Lesser known is the Blue Mesa member of this huge formation, and there is no better place to experience it than the Blue Mesa in this wonderful park.
I write the word “experience” because I know of no other way to describe discovering this other-worldly location where erosion has cut canyons into the brightly colored blue, magenta and cream sedimentary layers along an easy one mile trail in the southern half of the park. Petrified wood litters the bottoms of the canyons where it has washed out of the soils like detritus in a wood chopper’s yard, looking remarkably like it was freshly cut yesterday. Not 225 million years ago in the Triassic period.
This photograph is formatted in the traditional 1:3 ratio for panoramic scenes, and is intended to make a bold, colorful statement where dramatic and wide artwork is needed to fulfill a difficult design requirement.
