Description
In ancient times in Ukraine they believed in the mystical power of a water lily. According to legend, it could protect both from evil spirits in the water and from evil spirits on earth. They hoped that the water lily would protect from various troubles, and therefore, going on a long journey, they took it with them and wore it as an amulet. Water lilies were also called a mermaid flower: white flowers symbolized the beauty of seductive mermaids, and a flexible, spotted, serpentine rhizome - a mermaid tail. There was a belief that on the eve of the Trinity holiday, mermaids from snow-white lilies become beautiful virgins and lead round dances near rivers. Oil on canvas painting.
