I was delighted to find this beautiful black butterfly in a garden while in Maine. It was feasting on the nectar of this zinnia and came back to it several times almost posing as I took the photo.

Papilio polyxenes or black swallowtail butterflies are found from southern Canada through to South America. In North America they are more common east of the Rocky Mountains. They are usually found in open areas like fields, parks, marshes or deserts, and they prefer tropical or temperate habitats
