While driving in Fort Niobrara National Wildlife Refuge a few miles east of Valentine, Nebraska I came across three large bull bison. They weren’t too far from the road and they weren’t too close for my super telephoto lens, so I pulled over.

I expressed my wishes for an afternoon portrait shoot. I didn’t get a yes, nor did I get a no, and I’m pretty sure I didn’t even get a nod of the head. They didn’t take off, just kept grazing. So I started taking photographs.

As the minutes went by the three bulls kept slowing grazing their way toward my vehicle. I’m using a bean bag type of camera support that lays over my window opening with my 400mm prime lens mounted to a gimbal tripod head. On several occasions I’ve found myself in a traffic jam where a small herd have grazed their way to the road and the bison will get curious and stick their head in your window if it is down. Interested in photography since my high school years in the late 60�s, I finally purchased a Nikon SLR in the late 70�s and wasn�t long until I started selling my work. In 1970 I began my electrical career and continued to mix photography into my daily travels. With my successful electrical career coming to a close with retirement in mind, I won�t be one of those persons that retire and wonder what they will do with the rest of their lives.
