The central market area of old Beirut included Basta, a bustling conglomerate of souks where one could buy everything from Hermes scarfs to inlaid Syrian furniture. A small section was devoted to a particular hobby of some Lebanese: the keeping of songbirds, often placed in cages on their balconies.
