The owl has always been regarded as the wisest of creatures. We often see images of them wearing professorial robes, horn rimmed glasses and holding a pointing stick, as if they're before a large audience of college students, just about to impart the most marvelous words of wisdom. I'm not sure they really are all that wise, but I prefer to think they are. That they sit up in their trees of an afternoon, thinking the deepest of thoughts. This dear guy certainly seemed to be lost in his own musings on the afternoon I captured his image. We were at the Catoctin Wildlife Preserve in Thurmont, Maryland on a beautiful April afternoon. I on the outside of the cavern like structure, him perched on a tree-like branch on the inside. Maybe he was thinking about world peace, or something equally weighty. Or ... maybe he was just wishing he could fly out of his cage and catch a mousie for lunch.

Some things we'll just never know.
