Artist's Description
As a child in Haiti, I was always frighten of those deep note bamboo horns. I had always been puzzled to see people dancing on the street during the Lent period- When I knew about the origin of Rara Festival in Haiti; The parallelism between Voodooism and Catholicism; The motive of the Rara Festival, I was inspired to paint the "BAMBOO BLOWER IN HAITI RARA FESTIVAL".
In Haiti, during the period before Good Friday and Easter, Rara bands filled up the streets. It used to be a peasant Festival, nowadays it is all over Haiti. Rara is a colorful celebration. The people dance with excitement and joy. During colonial time, the masters did not allow the slaves to practice Voodooism, only Catholicism was allowed. Under the cover of adoration of Saints, the slaves practice their Voodoo Religion. Ezili Danto, creole for French: Erzulie d'en Tort, is a spirit in Voodoo religion. She is the spirit of motherhood,of love. She is depicted as Black Madonna, as well as, our Lady of Mount Carmel...

A very good friend explain to me ,the meaning of the Rara festival held in Haiti---impressive---our festival is call Junkanoo; loud,colourful costumes with almost every kind of musical instrument used that can make a sound-- including the cow bells, goat skin drums and, home made bugle and a whole lot of dancing.thank you for the story--beautiful composition and selected colours,love it...
