Description
This red sunrise is from my back yard view. Sunrises in Hawaii, or at least on Kauai, are spectacular. You will see several colors, red, orange, yellow, even purple in them. Autumn or fall are the best times to see these colors.
The color in the clouds is caused by ash from the Kilauea volcano at Halemaumau Crater on the Big Island to the south. The ash sticks to the moisture in the air and trade winds carry it over all the islands. It's called vog, which is short for volcanic ash and fog. Then the colors of sunlight are intensified through the ash across the sky. It all makes for some stunning sunrises and sunsets too.
