Description
Artist's impression of the European Space Agency's space probe Giotto on course for its encounter with Halley's Comet on 13 March 1986, when it will fly within 500 kilometres of the comet. The cylin- drical spacecraft is 1.84 metres in diameter, 1.6 metres tall & weighs 960 kilograms. It carries 10 experimental packages, including the Halley Multi- colour Camera (HMC) which is expected to return the first full-colour close-up pictures of the comet to Earth. Giotto was launched from Kourou, French Guiana, on July 2, 1985.
