Description
Benign prostatic hyperplasia. Artwork of a prostate gland (red, centre right) with nodular hyperplasia, or cell proliferation. The nodules (cream swirls) are due to the excess growth of normal cells within the gland. The lower part of the bladder (pink, upper frame) can be seen above the prostate, while part of the base of the penis (red/pink) lies below the gland. Prostate enlargement tends to obstruct the urethra, the tube running through the centre of the prostate down to the penis, resulting in urine retention. This condition usually occurs in men over 50. Treatment of more severe cases involves surgical removal of the prostate gland.
