Description
Segovia's awesome Roman aqueduct rises above more modern buildings on the outskirts of the historic centre. The aqueduct one of the most important Roman monuments in southwest Europe and was built using granite blocks fitted together without mortar. The famous arched section is 958m long, 29m high at its highest point and has 166 arches. It transported water 15km from the Guadarrama mountains to the city. It is the main landmark in Segovia (one of Spain's most historic cities); it and the city's historic centre were given UNESCO World Herigate Site status in 1985.
