Description
Traditionally attributed to Joan Vinckeboons, a cartographer for the Dutch West India Company, this map of the New York City region is considered the earliest survey of Manhattan Island (called Eyland Manatus on the map). The locations of numerous Dutch plantations are shown, described by a legend of owner's names in the bottom right, and several place names appear that exist today, such as Staten Eylant (Staten Island) and Conyne Eylant (Coney Island). Original title: Manatvs Gelegen op de Noot Riuier (Manhattan Lying on the North River)
