The American Tree Sparrow (Spizella arborea), a member of the Emberizidae family, is a medium-sized sparrow measuring about 6.25 inches in length and about 0.7 ounces in weight. American Tree Sparrows form large flocks in winter, sometimes mixed with other sparrows. They are mostly rufous, brown, gray, and white, distinguished by a rusty cap, bicolored bill, double wingbars, isolated dark breast spot, and rufous eyeline. They breed in tundra and boreal forest habitat in summer and migrate in winter to southern Canada and to the United States. They forage in small flocks on the ground for insects, seeds, and berries.
